Description

The Sacred Laws of the Âryas, Part 1, translated by Georg Bühler, was first published in 1879. It is the second book in the monumental Sacred Books of the East series, a 50 volume series of Asian religious texts. The sacred laws of the Aryas were taught in the schools of Apastamba, Gautama, Vâsishtha, and Baudhâyana, and deal with custom, rituals, duties and law. They include the four surviving written works of the ancient Indian tradition on the subject of dharma, or the rules of behavior recognized by a community. The oldest dharmasūtra is generally believed to have been that of Apastamba, followed by the dharmasūtras of Gautama, Baudhâyana, and an early version of Vâsishtha. This volume includes the dharmasūtras of Apastamba (dating from approximately 600-300 BCE) and Gautama (dating from approximately 600-400 BCE).

No. 2 in the Sacred Books of the East series.

This book has 96,410 words, and was originally published in 1879.
