Seneca (4 BCE–65 CE) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist, statesman, & adviser to the emperor Nero, all during the Silver Age of Latin literature. The Complete Works of Seneca is a fresh & compelling series of new English-language transl. of his works in 8 accessible vol. Ed. by world-renowned classicists Elizabeth Asmis, Shadi Bartsch, & Martha C. Nussbaum, this engaging collection restores Seneca—whose works have been highly praised by modern authors from Erasmus to Ralph Waldo Emerson—to his rightful place among the classical writers most widely studied in the humanities.
Anger, Mercy, Revenge comprises three key writings: the moral essays On Anger & On Clemency—which were penned as advice for the then young emperor, Nero—and the Apocolocyntosis, a brilliant satire lampooning the end of the reign of Claudius. Friend & tutor, as well as philosopher, Seneca welcomed the age of Nero in tones alternately serious, poetic, & comic—making Anger, Mercy, Revenge a work just as complicated, astute, & ambitious as its author. This project will publish the complete works of the Stoic philosopher and playwright Lucius Annaeus Seneca (“Seneca the Younger”) in authoritative, modern English translations. The translations are intended to be used by Latinless college students and by instructors in comparative literature, classics, philosophy, and drama courses as well as by more advanced students and professionals reading in Latin who wish to cite an authoritative translation. The translated texts, which will be vetted by the series editors as well as by outside scholars and translators, will be supplemented by introductions and notes appropriate to the intended audiences. The Latin original will not be included. While one purpose of the project is to make available high-quality translations to Latinless readers, the other, more tacit purpose is to restore Seneca’s oeuvre to the stature it enjoyed prior to the nineteenth century...
