The Golden Ass of Apuleius (2nd century AD Chr.) is the only completely preserved prose novel of Roman literature. The text, presented by a first-person narrator, resembles a picaresque novel and has inspired modern novelists time and again. The inserted, partly spicy novellas, especially the "fairy tale" of Amor and Psyche, have also had a strong effect.
