Metternich

Using the Metternich family archives at Plass, Constantin de Grunwald uncovers new facts often unfavorable to Metternich and depicts him as the spoiled child of fortune and the grand seigneur of the old regime whose political ideals were no different from those of Pobedonostsev. However, this in no way detracts from Grunwald's admiration for Metternich and sympathy for his basic attitudes. Metternich's conviction that all European revolutions were part of a single vast revolutionary conspiracy is for Grunwald largely justified, and the author shares Metternich's aversion to democracy and to the rise of the masses.
