In the final days of 1969, the Young Lords were on top of the world.
As the decade entered its midnight hour, this group of poor and
working-class Puerto Rican radicals brought an alternative vision of
society to life in their own neighborhood. Their aim was to reclaim
the dignity of the racially oppressed and elevate basic human needs
—food, clothing, housing, health, work, and community—over the
pursuit of profit. In the course of a fight with East Harlem’s First
Spanish United Methodist Church (FSUMC), they found an unlikely
but irresistible setting for the public presentation of their revolutionary
project.
